Description
CBTA stands for Competency-Based Training and Assessment. It is an NZ Transport Agency-approved pathway that allows riders to demonstrate their road-riding skills with an approved CBTA assessor. If you successfully complete the CBTA 6F assessment, you can apply for your full motorcycle licence without sitting the standard practical full licence test.
What is CBTA 6F?
The CBTA 6F assessment is for riders who already hold a Class 6R restricted motorcycle licence and are ready to progress to a Class 6F full motorcycle licence.
The assessment is completed on the road and focuses on safe, consistent, real-world riding. Your assessor will be looking at how you manage traffic, position your motorcycle, observe hazards, control your speed, make decisions, and ride confidently in normal road conditions.
Your riding skills are assessed throughout the full assessment ride, including mounting, dismounting, and a range of riding tasks performed during the ride.
When can you sit the CBTA 6F assessment?
You can sit the CBTA 6F assessment once you have held your Class 6R restricted motorcycle licence for at least 9 months.
After successfully completing the assessment, you will receive a Waka Kotahi / NZTA CBTA 6F certificate. You can then apply for your full motorcycle licence once you have held your restricted licence for at least 12 months, provided you are at least 17½ years old.

What happens during the CBTA 6F assessment?
The CBTA 6F assessment is completed on-road with an approved motorcycle assessor.
During the ride, your assessor will observe how you manage the motorcycle and respond to real traffic conditions. Your riding is assessed across the full ride, rather than on one single manoeuvre. NZTA notes that assessment covers the full duration of the ride and includes a range of riding tasks.
If you meet the required standard, you will be issued with a CBTA 6F certificate. You will then take this certificate to a driver licensing agent when applying for your full motorcycle licence.
